Review: The Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine
Description, Features, and Specs for the Rancilio Silvia
As an espresso aficionado you know that a great espresso is the result of combining the correct grind, perfect tamping, proper pressure and correct brew temperatures. Add to that mix the Rancilio Silvia espresso machine and you bring all of the elements together needed to produce espresso perfection. Think robust and complex flavor, thick, caramel-golden colored créma, brewed and served at the perfect temperature. Ahhh… life is good.
Rancilio is the Italian manufacturer of some of the finest espresso machines in the world. They have been producing world-class espresso machines since the 1920’s, enjoyed in cafes all around the world. Now, with the Rancilio Silvia home espresso and cappuccino machine, you can create the same Italian-quality café espresso in your own home.
The Rancilio Silvia is a single boiler machine, and undeniably one of the best on the market. It has been built with features comparable to commercial brand machines, including a brass boiler, brass lines and chromed brass brew head. All of these commercial-quality components help to maintain even temperatures and heat distribution for the perfect espresso. And no other espresso machine offers a heavy duty stainless steel body at this price.
The Silvia espresso machine is designed to be paired with a good grinder. There is no way to make great espresso without a high-quality grinder. So you need to include a quality burr grinder in your home espresso-making budget. We highly recommend pairing this machine with a top of the line-quality burr grinder such as the Rancilio Rocky or Gaggia MDF.
Making espresso drinks can’t get much easier. The Rancilio Silvia will consistently produce magnificent espresso, lattes, cappuccinos and more, with just the touch of a button. It’s a fine looking machine and very easy to use. The Silvia machine takes a little bit of time and patience to master, but once you do you’ll be making your favorite espresso drinks, just like in the traditional street cafés of Italy, to the delight of family and friends.
The Rancilio Silvia Has an Impressive List of Features
- Three important elements in producing great quality espresso are the size, style, and construction of the portafilter. The Rancilio Silvia’s portafilter, which features a new ergonomic grip handle, is similar in design to a commercial machine, and the size of the portafilter is also the same as a commercial machine. With a diameter of 58 mm the water can be distributed evenly over a wide surface area for a better extraction. The heavy chrome-plated brass filter holder retains heat and so keeps the temperature stable during the entire brewing process, producing a quality cup of espresso.
- The Silvia comes with two stainless steel filter baskets designed for use with ground coffee. One for a single shot and the other for a double shot. Both filter baskets measure 58mm in diameter. The Silvia can also accept ESE. (Easy Serve Espresso) pods with the Rancilio Pod Adapter Kit which is sold separately. Think twice before purchasing though because I’ve heard of problems using the pod adapter.
- The Rancilio Silvia has a brew group head (the part of the machine that the portafilter locks onto for brewing) that is also made of — guess what? — heavy duty chrome-plated brass. Again, by using brass for these components the heat will be evenly distributed and result in temperature-consistent espresso. The group head has also been designed to evenly distribute water across the coffee grounds for a better extraction.
- More brass. The Silvia’s single boiler is also made of marine grade brass. The large 12 ounce boiler produces the best steaming power and recycle time when brewing multiple espressos. This boiler can quickly reach coffee-brewing or milk-frothing temperature so there’s very little waiting around.
- Three thermostats are built into the Rancilio Silvia. One controls the temperature for espresso, one controls the temperature for steam, and another one monitors the boiler to prevent it from overheating or building up too much steam pressure. In case the boiler overheats, the high limit switch can be reset and does not have to be replaced.
- The Rancilio Silvia features the same type of switches as you would find on some of Rancilio’s commercial units. There are just four switches. The main power switch is located in the center by itself. When this is turned on the heating element is activated and an orange ready light will then turn on. When the light goes off the machine is at operating temperature. The top left switch operates the pump and is also known as the brew switch. Turn on when you’re ready to start the brewing process and off when you are finished making your drink. The middle button on the left is for dispensing hot water. The bottom left switch activates the steam function. When this is turned on the boiler will heat up to steam temperature.
- For lattes and cappuccinos, flip the bottom left steam switch. An orange ready light will turn on. When the orange light goes off, open the steam valve and start frothing milk. The Rancilio Silvia features a new commercial grade, single hole milk frothing tip. This new, stainless steel, articulated, multi-directional wand makes the entire process even easier, and even allows for larger milk pitchers. In less than two minutes the Silvia will steam enough milk to make an average sized latte.
- The Rancilio Silvia has built in a three-way solenoid valve into the brew group. Generally, only high-end home and commercial espresso machines feature a pressure relief system. The pressure relief system is a feature that relieves the pressure from the brew group when the brew switch is turned off. The pressure relief system helps reduce splatter if you should inadvertently remove the portafilter too quickly. Additionally, it dries out the spent coffee grounds and results in a “dry puck” of coffee grounds for easier cleanup.
- Preheating your cups is very important in creating a great espresso. The Rancilio Silvia has a cup warmer that holds as amny as six espresso cups. The cup-warming surface on the top of the machine is heated from the residual heat of the boiler. Use the cup warmer to keep your espresso cups at the right temperature so that the espresso isn’t cooled off when it enters a cold cup.
- If you want hot water for any reason, be it hot chocolate, tea, or for a Café Americano, it is a simple matter to provide. Just turn on the brew switch and open the steam knob. Hot water will start to stream out of the frothing wand.
- The large, removable, 2 quart water reservoir can be refilled at the sink, or while in place from the top of the machine any time during the operation, allowing for an endless supply of coffee or steam.
- The Rancilio Silvia has a stainless steel drip pan and cup try, both easy to remove and clean.
- The construction of this unit is unmatched in other machines in this price category. The brushed stainless steel construction gives the Rancilio Silvia a modern look — sleek yet functional. The external housing is only part of the story, however. Inside the housing you will find that Rancilio used a rust resistant, heavy iron frame, stainless steel bolts and screws, and only the finest tubing and fittings. Built to last.
